Hide your details with WHOIS privacy

Every domain has an owner, and many registries publish the owner’s details in public WHOIS lookups, where they can be collected for spam. WHOIS privacy hides your name, address, phone and email from those lookups.

It costs $7.99 a year, plus tax, per domain, and renews yearly. Owners and admins of the workspace can add it and switch it on or off.

  1. In the console, open Domains and click the domain.

  2. In the WHOIS privacy card, click Add WHOIS privacy.

  3. Pay in the secure checkout.

It switches on within a minute or two. The card then shows it’s on and when it renews.

The WHOIS privacy card has a switch.

  • Switching it off shows your details in public WHOIS again, and stops the renewal. It stays paid until the date shown, and doesn’t renew after that.
  • Switching it back on before that date costs nothing, and the renewal starts again.

There’s no charge for switching it on or off while it’s paid for.

WHOIS privacy renews every year at $7.99 plus tax while it’s on. You’ll see it in Billing, on the Domains tab, next to the domain, where Update card for privacy changes the card it’s charged to.

  • .uk and .co.uk domains don’t need it. Nominet, the .uk registry, already keeps owners’ details out of public WHOIS. The card says Not needed.
  • If a registry doesn’t offer WHOIS privacy for an extension, the card says so.

If you already had WHOIS privacy on a domain moved from the old dashboard, it stays on until the date it was paid to, and the card shows that date. You can switch it on or off at no cost until then. To keep it after that, click Keep it after (with the date) and enter your card in the checkout. Nothing is charged until a week before it runs out.
